Chapter 7 – WHY MY FATHER WAS KEPT OUT

Dad disliked Adrian before the violence.

Not because Adrian was Marzano.

Dad’s own family history gave him no moral right to become aristocratic.

He disliked Adrian because Adrian performed confidence.

At business dinners, Adrian spoke as though uncertainty were weakness.

Dad said:

“A man who never says ‘I don’t know’ is either lying or useless.”

Adrian heard about the quote.

Relations cooled.

Then Harbor Crown.

Dad had no investment in the casino operation.

No regulatory role.

No vote.

That was important.

His power could not approve or destroy the license.

But he knew regulated businesses.

He also knew me.

Vivienne understood that.

If Dad saw bruises, he would ask the direct question she had spent months teaching me not to answer.

Who did that?

Then he would take me out of the house before Monday.

If I left, Vivienne could no longer control the setting of the regulatory interview.

No private breakfast beforehand.

No answer sheet.

No Adrian nearby.

No carefully selected explanation.

That was why the baby shower mattered.

My father had originally planned to arrive only for the final hour.

Vivienne arranged the schedule.

She seated him in an adjoining VIP room with older relatives.

Why?

She told me he preferred quieter conversation.

True.

Also convenient.

Then the shawl slipped.

Everything failed in three seconds.
