Chapter 20 – ADRIAN TELLS THE TRUTH

Adrian’s first real apology came during a co-parenting session.

“I didn’t think I was an abusive husband.”

I said nothing.

“I thought abusive husbands were men like my father.”

There.

Paul again.

“Men who punched. Broke bones. Terrified everybody.”

Then:

“I thought grabbing you was different.”

“It was still frightening.”

“I know.”

“Now.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“And when Harbor Crown came, I started thinking disclosure would make ordinary marriage problems look criminal.”

“Were they ordinary?”

“No.”

That answer mattered.

Then:

“I chose the license over making you safe.”

I looked at him.

“You chose your image over reality.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”
