The emergency hearing happened the next morning.
I wore a borrowed blouse because my own clothes were still in the house.
Dad sat beside me.
Sophie sat on my other side with headphones and a coloring book.
Ryan came in with a lawyer and a face full of injured pride.
Diane did not appear.
She had been held overnight after threatening the arresting officer.
That sounded like her.
Ryan’s lawyer said I had exaggerated a “domestic disagreement.”
Marla stood.
“Your Honor, we have video.”
The courtroom watched my father’s recording.
I saw myself backing away.
I heard the belt.
I heard Ryan blame me.
I watched my daughter’s small shadow in the hallway.
Sophie had seen more than I knew.
The judge’s jaw tightened.
Marla then presented the financial records.
Ryan claimed the transfers were loans.
“To his mother?” the judge asked.
“Yes.”
“From an account belonging solely to his wife?”
Ryan swallowed.
“She gave permission.”
I stood so fast Marla touched my arm.
“I didn’t even know the account existed.”
The judge looked at Ryan.
That look was enough.
Emergency protection granted.
Ryan removed from the home.
Diane no contact.
Temporary sole custody to me.
Financial freeze on remaining marital accounts.
Outside court, Ryan approached.
Dad stepped in front of me.
Ryan’s voice broke.
“Emily, please. Mom pressured me.”
I stared at him.
“You moved faster to protect her wrist than to stop her belt.”
His eyes filled.
“Don’t take Sophie.”
I looked back at our daughter.
She was hiding behind Dad’s leg.
“You already made her afraid of you.”
