Chapter 1

I was standing in my own living room when Diane picked up the leather belt.

The belt had been lying across the armchair because Ryan had thrown it there after work.

Diane lifted it like it belonged in her hand.

Like hurting me was simply another household chore.

All I had said was that she could no longer decide how I raised my daughter.

“You need to learn respect,” she said.

My heart pounded.

“Diane, put that down.”

Ryan stood beside her.

My husband.

The man who promised to protect me.

He looked at me like I was the problem.

“Emily, just apologize.”

“For what?”

The belt cracked against my arm.

Pain shot through me.

I cried out and stumbled backward.

“Mom,” Ryan muttered. “Enough.”

But he did not touch her.

He did not take the belt.

Diane swung again.

Then again.

“Ryan!” I screamed. “Stop her!”

He folded his arms.

“You keep provoking her.”

I stared at him.

“Your mother is hitting your wife, and you’re blaming me?”

Diane raised the belt higher.

“This family was peaceful before you came along.”

I caught her wrist before the next strike landed.

“Don’t touch me again.”

Ryan moved instantly then.

Not to protect me.

To protect her.

He grabbed my hand and ripped it away from Diane.

“Get your hands off Mom!”

The front door opened.

A voice filled the room.

“Then get your hands off my daughter.”

Everything stopped.

My father stood in the doorway with his travel bag still over one shoulder.

He had driven from Nashville to surprise me for my birthday.

Instead, he found Diane holding a belt and Ryan gripping my wrist.

“Dad,” I whispered.

His face went terrifyingly calm.

“Emily, come here.”

Ryan stepped in front of me.

“Sir, you don’t understand.”

Dad looked at him.

“I understand exactly what I walked in on.”

Diane tossed the belt onto the couch.

“She attacked me first.”

Dad did not even glance at her.

He pulled out his phone.

“Good thing I wasn’t the only one who saw it.”

Ryan went pale.

“What does that mean?”

Dad pointed to the small camera clipped to his jacket.

“I started recording before I opened the door because I heard Emily screaming from outside.”

Diane’s face lost every bit of color.

Then Dad looked directly at Ryan.

“But that recording is not the only reason you should be worried.”

Ryan swallowed.

Dad reached into his coat and pulled out a thick envelope.

“I came here because my attorney finally found where the money Emily inherited from her grandmother went.”

My stomach dropped.

“What money?”

Ryan stopped breathing.

Dad’s voice was quiet.

“Ask your husband why he transferred two hundred forty thousand dollars to his mother three months ago.”
