Chapter 18

Sophie became a teenager with a voice big enough for every year Diane tried to shrink her.

She joined debate.

Then theater.

Then student council.

At fourteen, she gave a speech at a fundraiser for Loud Hearts.

“When I was little, I had trouble speaking,” she said. “Some adults used silence against my mom. Some helped me find words. I think every kid deserves adults who listen before they understand.”

The room stood.

I cried into a napkin.

Dad cried openly and blamed allergies.

Marla said allergies did not work indoors.

Ryan stood in the back, quiet and proud.

Afterward, Sophie let him hug her.

Then she came to me.

“Was it good?”

“It was everything.”

She smiled.

“I wasn’t scared.”

I touched her hair.

“I could tell.”

That night, I opened Grandma Ruth’s letter again.

A woman needs a door that opens outward.

I looked around my kitchen.

At Sophie laughing with Dad.

At Marla arguing with Ryan about coffee.

At the life I had rebuilt.

The door was open.

We were not running anymore.

We were welcoming others through.
