Chapter 17

Ryan earned unsupervised visits when Sophie was ten.

Short ones.

Public at first.

Then afternoons.

Never overnights until Sophie asked.

He had kept every payment.

Every therapy appointment.

Every boundary.

He had also testified in a training for men leaving abusive family systems.

He did not make himself the hero.

That mattered.

One day, Sophie came home from the park with him and said, “Daddy told another dad not to yell.”

I looked at Ryan.

He shrugged.

“The guy was scaring his kid.”

Sophie added, “Daddy said scared kids remember.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

I looked away.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was moved, and I did not know where to put it.

Later, he said, “I know I don’t deserve to be seen as changed.”

“No one deserves trust,” I said. “They build it.”

He nodded.

“I’m still building.”

“Yes.”

Diane died in prison that winter.

Ryan cried when he told me.

I let him.

Not for her.

For the boy she had shaped and the man trying to survive that shape.

Sophie asked if we had to go to the funeral.

Ryan said, “No.”

That was growth.
