Chapter 25 – VIVIENNE’S LAST APOLOGY

Vivienne was seventy-two when she apologized to me without defending herself.

No:

I loved my son.

No:

I was scared.

No:

I didn’t know what else to do.

She said:

“I saw marks on your body and treated them as a public-relations problem.”

I nodded.

“I slapped you because you let them become visible.”

“Yes.”

“I tried to teach you the same silence that kept me married.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

I believed her.

Forgiveness became possible.

Distance remained.

Both can be true.
