Chapter 20 – MY APOLOGY TO CLAIRE

We met at Lucy’s preschool after a parent conference.

Lucy was doing well.

Still cautious with stairs.

Shoulder healing.

Drawing pictures of nurses with impossibly long arms.

The teacher said:

“She talks about Mommy’s secret boot.”

Claire winced.

I said:

“We’re working on simpler language.”

Outside, I stopped her.

“Claire.”

She turned.

“I owe you an apology.”

She waited.

Not helping.

“I asked for your visits with Lucy to be professionally supervised.”

“Yes.”

“I thought because you stayed, you had failed her.”

Claire’s face changed slightly.

I continued.

“I was wrong.”

Silence.

“I also showed Nicole part of the video because I wanted Wade’s family to believe me.”

“Yes.”

“That was wrong.”

“Yes.”

I almost smiled.

No discount.

Then:

“I keep thinking if you had called me earlier, I could have prevented everything.”

Claire looked toward the playground.

“Maybe.”

Not:

You could not.

Maybe.

That mattered.

“Or you could have come to the house, fought Wade, terrified Lucy, and made me even more afraid to admit how bad things were.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know.”

Neither did I.

She looked at me.

“That is the hardest part. There isn’t a perfect version where I make one different call and everything fixes itself.”

“No.”

Then:

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you when Wade started controlling exchanges.”

I stopped.

“You don’t owe me equal apology.”

“I know.”

Good.

She continued.

“But I should have told you because it affected Lucy.”

Specific.

Not self-blame for abuse.

Responsibility for co-parenting information.

That distinction helped both of us.
