Chapter 7

Denise Alvarez became my warning from the future.

She brought a folder thicker than mine.

Medical notes.

Family affidavits.

Property transfer forms.

Emails.

All the same shape as Daniel’s plan.

A grieving woman.

A valuable property.

A man close enough to claim concern.

A developer ready to profit.

“The first thing they steal is not the house,” Denise said. “It is your credibility.”

Alicia wrote that down.

So did I.

Denise looked at Michael.

“You are the brother?”

“Yes.”

“You came fast?”

“I was already outside.”

She smiled.

“Good. Fast family interrupts paperwork.”

Michael liked her immediately.

Denise’s case helped establish pattern.

Victor Kane had done this before.

Not always the same way.

But close enough.

Detective Ruiz obtained warrants for Daniel’s accounts and Victor’s communications.

That was when the third layer appeared.

Daniel had debts.

Huge ones.

Gambling.

Bad investments.

Private loans.

He had hidden them throughout our marriage.

The boutique hotel was not just ambition.

It was desperation.

My mother’s house was his way out.

Madison was supposed to help him look like a man with a new future.

I was supposed to look like a grieving, unstable wife blocking progress.

Michael was supposed to be kept away.

My mother’s memorial day was supposed to trigger the scene.

Daniel almost succeeded.

Almost.

The divorce moved quickly after that.

Daniel’s attorney tried to negotiate.

He would waive claim to the house if I dropped fraud allegations.

Alicia laughed for a full five seconds.

Then said, “No.”

Daniel sent one email through counsel.

Emily and I both made mistakes. I want an amicable separation.

I replied through Alicia.

My mistake was trusting you. Yours was fraud, adultery, and assault.

Alicia said it was not legal language.

I said send it anyway.

She did.

The criminal investigation into the assault continued separately.

Daniel’s lawyer argued I struck back.

The police had photos of my cheek and wrist.

Madison’s statement.

Michael’s arrival.

My call.

The memorial setup.

The context.

Daniel accepted a plea for domestic assault.

Probation.

Anger management.

No contact except through attorneys.

It was not enough.

But it was a record.

The fraud charges took longer.

Victor Kane fought.

Daniel blamed Victor.

Victor blamed Daniel.

Madison cooperated fully and avoided charges.

I did not become friends with her.

But I stopped hating the sound of her name.

That was enough.
