Chapter 9

The fraud case became bigger than our marriage.

Victor Kane was arrested first.

Wire fraud.

Forgery conspiracy.

Financial exploitation.

Attempted property fraud.

Daniel was arrested two weeks later.

He had expected charges.

Still, seeing him in handcuffs outside his attorney’s office did something strange to me.

I felt relief.

Then grief.

Then anger at the grief.

Alicia called that normal.

I called it annoying.

Daniel’s mugshot spread online.

So did old photos of us from charity events.

People messaged.

I always knew something was off.

You looked so happy together.

Why didn’t you leave sooner?

That last one made me want to throw my phone into the lake.

I did not answer.

Instead, I gave one statement through Alicia.

My focus is preserving my mother’s home and cooperating with investigators. Abuse and fraud often begin long before outsiders can see them.

That was all.

Denise gave interviews.

She was better at it.

Older.

Sharper.

Less worried about politeness.

“They call women unstable because it is cheaper than buying the property honestly,” she told one reporter.

I adored her.

The trial took nearly a year to begin.

In that time, I became someone I did not recognize.

Not harder exactly.

Clearer.

I joined Denise in pushing for better title alerts for inherited homes.

I spoke to widow support groups.

I told women to monitor property records.

To keep copies.

To tell one trusted person.

To take insults about being “too emotional” seriously when money was involved.

Michael said I had become Mom with better Wi-Fi.

I took that as praise.
