In April 2014, Winifred Peel, a 77-year-old woman from Bromborough in Wirral, walked to her local NatWest ATM to withdraw some cash. Three young men had been driving around the area that day in a car, specifically looking for what they described as easy targets.
Peel, alone at a cash machine, fit their description perfectly. Or so they thought.
Two of the men approached her from behind while the third kept watch nearby. One pushed her aside while the other leaned over and pressed the button to withdraw £200 from her account. It was at that moment Peel realised exactly what was happening.
She grabbed one of them by the collar and slammed his head into the cash machine. Then she did it again. Then a third time. The men fled the scene.
What they didn’t know was that the ATM’s CCTV camera had captured the entire altercation in clear detail, including their faces. And the injuries Peel had inflicted on one of them made identification even easier. When police located the suspects shortly after, one was still visibly hurt from the encounter.
All three were arrested, charged, and convicted. Felix Stoica, 19, was sentenced to two years in a young offenders’ institution. Florin Geblescu received 18 months and Piper Dumitru eight months. The judge told them they had targeted a vulnerable victim and cast a deep shadow over the twilight of her life.
Peel, for her part, had grown up with three brothers and been active in sports her whole life. She said the experience shook her deeply and changed her confidence. But she never regretted fighting back.
