Japan is taking a major step forward in renewable energy with the development of ultra-thin, flexible solar films that can be installed in places where traditional solar panels are impractical. The technology is based on perovskite solar cells, which are lightweight, bendable, and capable of adapting to curved walls, rooftops, and other challenging surfaces.
Unlike conventional silicon solar panels, perovskite solar films offer greater installation flexibility, making them suitable for a wider range of buildings and urban infrastructure. One of the companies driving this innovation is Sekisui Chemical, which has developed a 30-centimeter-wide roll-to-roll manufacturing process. This continuous production method improves manufacturing efficiency and marks an important milestone toward large-scale commercial production.
As production capacity grows, flexible perovskite solar cells could become more affordable while increasing access to clean energy in locations that were previously unsuitable for conventional solar technology.
