One detail broke Wade’s porch story before the USB content did.
The rain boots were wet on the outside.
Dry inside.
No mud on Lucy’s socks.
No grit around the boot cuff.
Her dress and knees had no fresh outdoor soil.
If she had fallen from a wet porch while wearing the boots, none of that was impossible.
But the boots themselves had been put on after the injury.
Claire admitted it.
Why?
Because she dressed Lucy for the hospital after the clavicle injury.
It was raining.
Wade shouted:
“Put her boots on.”
Claire did.
Then, while Wade went to get his wallet and keys, Claire slid the USB behind the removable lining of the left boot.
She told Lucy:
“Keep your boots on until a nurse or Daddy is with you.”
Not:
Never let doctors remove them.
Not:
Fight.
Keep them on until safe adult.
Lucy interpreted literally.
At the hospital, the nurse had allowed the boots to remain during initial imaging because the urgent focus was shoulder pain and Lucy was distressed.
Later, once she was calmer, the nurse wanted them off for complete assessment.
Wade had spent nearly an hour staring at those boots.
Why not take them himself?
Because hospital staff were nearby.
Because Lucy screamed when he touched them.
Because he did not know which boot.
Because removing them suddenly after insisting the porch story involved rain would look strange.
Then the nurse brought trauma shears.
Panic outran strategy.
“Nothing’s in there.”
