Chapter 6 – CELESTE THE KEEPER

Celeste Rinaldi was my grandfather’s youngest sister’s daughter.

Technically my grandaunt by family habit rather than strict generation? We called her that.

She had no children.

Never married.

Spent thirty years managing family ceremonies, archive work, and hospitality.

If Cecilia in another family might have controlled dining, Celeste controlled thresholds.

Who entered.

Who sat where.

Who used which room.

Which photographs appeared.

Who wore black at funerals.

Who entered the family chapel before burial.

She loved order because order gave her a role.

When my father retired, I professionalized much of the estate.

Event staff handled dinners.

Archivists handled documents.

A security company handled access.

Celeste lost responsibilities gradually.

No one fired her.

No one humiliated her.

Still, she felt displaced.

Vittorio did too.

They began spending more time together.

Two former centers of gravity sharing stories about how everything had become casual.

Children upstairs.

Staff saying no.

Guests wearing open collars.

My daughter became symbolic because she was the smallest person behaving as if the new rules were normal.

To Sophie, they were.
