A kindergarten’s missing shoe mystery had an adorable ending after security cameras exposed the unexpected thief.

For weeks, teachers at a kindergarten in southwestern Japan were baffled by a strange mystery. Children’s indoor shoes kept disappearing from their cubbies, one pair at a time.

At first, staff feared someone was sneaking into the school. More than a dozen small white shoes vanished, leaving parents and teachers increasingly concerned. Local police even became involved, treating the case like a possible theft.

To solve the mystery, officers installed three security cameras around the shoe storage area.

When they reviewed the footage, they couldn’t believe what they saw.

Instead of catching a human thief, the cameras revealed a tiny wild weasel quietly sneaking into the school. The animal would carefully grab a child’s shoe in its mouth before racing away with it.

Police said the weasel stole a total of 15 shoes before the cameras finally caught it in the act. Experts believe the animal was likely collecting the lightweight canvas shoes to help build or line its nest.

The discovery immediately changed the mood from concern to laughter. Teachers and parents were relieved that no person had been targeting the children, and many couldn’t stop smiling after watching the surveillance footage.

Although the missing shoes were never recovered, the kindergarten solved the problem by covering the shoe cubbies with protective netting to keep the furry thief away.

The unusual case quickly made headlines around the world, proving that sometimes the funniest criminal investigations end with the most unexpected suspects.
