What began as a frightening home burglary ended with one of the most bizarre arrests police had ever made.
According to court proceedings, 40-year-old David Potham broke into a family home in Port Tennant, Swansea, during the early hours of May 25, 2022, while the homeowners were asleep upstairs. After forcing his way inside, he searched the property and collected valuables, including jewelry, a laptop, children’s passports, and other personal belongings.
But instead of leaving the house with the stolen items, Potham decided to make himself comfortable.
Prosecutors said he helped himself to several Easter eggs he found inside the home, leaving chocolate wrappers scattered across the living room. After his late-night snack, he stretched out on the family’s sofa and fell asleep.
The following morning, the homeowner walked downstairs expecting an ordinary start to the day. Instead, he found an unknown man peacefully sleeping on the sofa in the middle of the living room. The suspect was surrounded by half-eaten Easter eggs, while a backpack nearby contained many of the family’s stolen belongings.
The homeowner immediately called police and kept his children safely upstairs while officers rushed to the scene.
When officers arrived, they found Potham still asleep. He had to be woken up before being arrested. Police also discovered he was wearing the homeowner’s socks on his hands and had stolen earrings in his pocket.
During questioning, Potham claimed he could remember very little because of his alcohol and drug use. He even told investigators he had “no idea” why he was wearing socks on his hands.
The bizarre details of the case quickly made headlines across the UK. While many readers laughed at the unusual circumstances of the arrest, the court noted that the burglary had a serious emotional impact on the family, particularly the young children who were left frightened by the experience.
Potham, who had more than 140 previous offences on his criminal record, later pleaded guilty to burglary. Swansea Crown Court sentenced him to four years in prison.
Although the incident had an almost unbelievable ending, authorities reminded the public that burglary remains a serious crime despite the unusual mistakes made by the offender.
